Texas English, accent bias, and our digital archive

The Subtitle podcast has published a carefully researched episode about Texas English. It contains an interview with TELL researchers Lars Hinrichs and Erica Brozovsky, covering not only language in Texas, but also TELL's digital historical language archive!

In particular, friends of TELL might want to listen to the section starting at the 6 minute mark. You will hear some neatly selected and edited samples from our historical, now-digital speech archive there!

A poem in Texas German

After the Texan Translation episode of July 3rd, 2020, had aired, we got an email from Christiane Ferdinand-Gonzalez (how's that for a truly Texas-German name!). Christiane sent a photo of a poem that was published in 1983 in the Fredricksburg Radio Post. It's a great illustration of the way that German mixes with plenty of English vocabulary in the old dialect of Texas German.
